![]() ![]() Shares It's the eternal quest for graphic designers the world over: they want something like Helvetica, but not Helvetica. ![]() But it doesn't have to be that way: here are 10 alternatives to the much-used font. Love it or hate it, Helvetica is everywhere. There are several alternatives at Typekit, however, and Helvetica is available for web use from MyFonts (self-hosted) and (subscription). Helvetica is owned by Linotype who has no licensing agreement with Typekit. More like the 50's swiss grotesque font before the success of photocomposition process. Neue Haas Grotesk is a digitalised version of Helvetica original metal glyphes. This isn't an alternate of Helvetica because Helvetica is based on Akzidenz Grotesk! Arial isn't the default font in Macs but it's included under the name 'Univers ER Mac'. ![]() Alas, Microsoft’s implementation lacks transparency or clarity for anyone who needs the exact font used. The idea of font substitution is a good one. You can change the font substitution for an individual document on the Word dialog shown above by choosing another font. Windows substituting Arial font for Helvetica. If you opened an InDesign document with that font missing, it is likely (but not necessarily) a document recently processed on a Macintosh. It is a system font that is bundled with recent versions of the MacOS with some form of the words Helvetica and Neue in the name of the font. FYI, Helvetica Neue is not a WIndows system font. ![]()
